Quick Notes for Prospective Members

  • The SAWC is a choral group under the Arizona Choral Arts Association (ACAA) a non-profit, non-affiliated corporation.  Our members perform a versatile and varied choral repertoire to benefit and educate the diverse community in Arizona.
  • Artistic Director: Terrie Ashbaugh, M.M.  Assistant Director:  Stacey Seaman
  • Practice: Mondays  7-9 PM at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1220 W.Magee, east of La Canada Dr.
  • Musical Genre: Eclectic mix of popular, classical, folk, Broadway, international, seasonal.
  • Auditions/Voice Sections: Auditions are conducted by the Artistic Director to determine ability to carry a tune, voice range and appropriate voice section - Alto I, Alto II, Soprano I, or Soprano II. New members are strongly encouraged to have some previous choral experience or understand how to read section parts in a musical score but this is not required.   The Chorus provides Sectional CD’s to practice with for each season.
  • Concerts: two major ticketed events - Winter Concert in December, Spring Concert is in April or May, small venue concerts throughout the season (some daytime, some evening) and collaborative concerts.
  • Deciding about Membership: Recruitment takes place in September and January. Guests are invited to participate in two rehearsal sessions before deciding on membership. Members of the chorus are expected to have a high degree of commitment, including regular attendance at rehearsals, practice learning the music at home, participation in at least 2 small venue concerts during the season, selling tickets to end-of-season major concerts, participation in a committee and fundraiser. Winter Visitors need to be here thru the month of December for Winter Season and thru the month of April or May for Spring Season.
  • Tuition:  $125 per season OR both seasons paid in advance in September $225.
    • Tuition covers the purchase of music, concert venues, director’s salaries and general operating cost to run chorus activities.
    • Tuition payments are collected during the recruitment period in September and January, and can be made by cash, check, credit card, or via PayPal.
    • Tuition payments are non-refundable. New members are encouraged to pay by the season until they are certain they can commit time and energy to participation for the entire year.   Payment flexibility/scholarship support: Jan Huss, SAWC Chair,
  • Other fees:  Formal costume for Winter/Spring concerts purchased for approximately $150 - 200 depending on your size and semester you join.  Chorus t-shirts for Spring small venue concerts for approximately $26-28 for Misses sizes and $28-32 for Women’s sizes
  • Email listserv:  Members with an email address can receive chorus messages via a listserv moderated by Jane Hamilton: Those without email access are assigned a communication ‘Buddy’ who will mail/phone or bring them messages of importance.
  • Governance: The SAWC is governed by a Community Board of Directors called the Arizona Choral Arts Association (ACAA) and by the SAWC Board of Directors which oversees the daily business of the chorus and coordinates various committees of chorus volunteers.
